黄金作为我国贵金属货币体系的一员，是我国古代乃至近现代货币体系的一个重要组成部分其作为货币，早在战国时期的楚国就已经开始使用。战国之后，各代黄金货币时有使用，但是黄金作为大额货币，在中国古代铸行并不广泛。就现有资料来看，除战国、汉代、宋代金币遗物相对较多外，其它时期黄金货币均较为罕见。
黄金的货币特征或货币作用在不同的历史时期、、不同的流通区域有所不同。就明朝而言，明朝初年是钱钞兼行的货币流通制度，明中叶以后，白银取代纸币和铜钱成为主要流通货币，在流通领域逐步形成了大数用银，小数用钱的货币流通格局。清朝铸造了户部造的光绪元宝黄金样币和清朝金砖，此外还有非民间流通的皇室赏赐金锭，这也就是我们今天要介绍的顺治年造金蛋与雍正年造金条。
