道光二十年鸦片战争爆发，由于战事的失利，魏源悲愤填膺，爱国心切，于道光二十二年，愤然弃笔从戎，投入两江总督、抵抗派将领裕谦幕府，到定海前线参谋战事。于道光二十二年写成50卷的《海国图志》，道光二十七年，魏源又将《海国图志》增补为60卷本，刊于扬州；咸丰二年又扩充为百卷本。这是中国近代史上最早的一部由国人自己编写的有关世界各国情况介绍的巨著。

In the 22nd year of the Daoguang reign, the "Hai Guo Tu Zhi" was written in 50 volumes. In the 27th year of the Daoguang reign, Wei Yuan added the "Hai Guo Tu Zhi" to 60 volumes and published it in Yangzhou; In the second year of Xianfeng, it was expanded to a hundred volume edition. This is the first great book about the introduction of countries in the world written by Chinese people in Late modern period.
