The predecessor of the current Citibank was the City Bank of New York, established in New York in 1812. So far, it has a history of over two hundred years. The official name of early Citibank was "Citibank". People find the name 'Citibank' awkward, difficult to remember, and nameless. When they see a flag with many small stars hanging at the door, that is, the American flag, they casually call it 'Citibank'. Bank of America followed the Romans and simply printed its name as "Citibank America" on paper currency. Later, even its nameplate and official name were changed to Citibank. Although the head office in the United States changed its name several times due to equity changes, this Chinese name has been retained.

In 1902, Citibank USA opened its Shanghai branch at No. 1A Jiujiang Road (now No. 41 Jiujiang Road). This was the first financial institution in China by the United States, mainly handling US trade with China, exchange bills, discounting, and issuing promissory notes. As the only US bank in China, it was entrusted as the agent of the US government's treasury in China, entrusted with taking over the Boxer Indemnity. Since the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign (1907), Citibank has issued banknotes in Shanghai under the name of "American Citibank" with privileges. The first edition of banknotes was printed in 1905 by the American Banknote Company in New York, with denominations of five, ten, and one hundred yuan. In 1918, the bank issued an additional one yuan denomination of Shanghai Place Names Bill under the name of "Citibank of America", and also issued a black patterned Shanghai Place Names Silver Bill with five, ten, and one hundred or two denominations. The banknotes in this bank have been recycled and destroyed, and there are not many silver dollars or silver bills in existence.

Recently, our company collected a 1905 American Citibank Shanghai One Hundred Yuan sample ticket. The front of the collection is marked with the Chinese and English bank name, with a six digit red "000000" number on both sides of the bank name. The left side is the iconic design of the bank, Eagle and Earth. The gorgeous colorful pattern on the right side occupies the visual focus, with a "100" face value in the center, stamped with the words "SPECIMEN" in red, and the place name "Shanghai" on the left and right sides below, The left and right sides of the ticket are inscribed with the words "one hundred yuan". The four corners of the bill have a face value of "100", and the collection has clear texture, indicating the exquisite shaping techniques at that time.

The top of the back of the collection is the Chinese name of the bank, with a central pattern of an eagle standing on the roof of the bank. The two sides of the bank house have patterns of the eastern and western hemispheres of the earth, and on both sides of the pattern, there are "100" denominations. The place name "Shanghai" is located on the left and right sides, and the words "one hundred yuan" are written directly on the left and right sides. It is said that the high denomination silver coupons issued by Citibank in Shanghai have a very small circulation and have been mostly recycled and destroyed. Therefore, the bank currently does not have any physical copies of the original coupons in circulation, making their coupons particularly precious.
