The custom of burning incense has a long history in our country. People usually burn their clothes for the sake of etiquette. It is more common for ancient literati and scholars to burn a stick of incense in the study where they read and write, creating an atmosphere of "red tea adds fragrance to night reading". Therefore, incense burners made of pottery, porcelain, copper, iron, and tiles appeared as early as before the Han Dynasty. With the rapid development of the copper casting industry in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, the original incense burners made of other materials were gradually replaced by copper incense burners. The peak stage of copper incense burner production was during the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Xuande of the Ming Dynasty (grandson of Zhu Di), in order to satisfy his hobby of admiring incense burners, he ordered the import of a batch of red copper from the Kingdom of Siam, and instructed the court craftsman Lv Zhen and the Ministry of Works attendant Wu Bangzuo to design and supervise incense burners based on the styles of famous porcelain ware stored in the imperial palace, such as Chai Kiln, Ru Kiln, Guan Kiln, Ge Kiln, Jun Kiln, and Ding Kiln, as well as historical records such as the "Xuanhe Bo Gu Tu Lu" and "Archaeological Map".

During the reign of Xuande, countless artifacts were made, which can be considered excellent works. Xuande furnace, as one of them, can be said to have no previous learning, but later unable to continue. It is truly an exquisite antique in the world, and is the crystallization of the wisdom and art of ancient Chinese craftsmen. The value of Xuande furnaces is very high, not only because of their beauty and uniqueness, but also because of their scarcity and historical background. They were only produced for a period of time during the Xuande period, and the production quantity was very limited. Therefore, their prices in the auction market are very high. According to reports, the most expensive Ming Dynasty Xuande furnace was sold at an auction in 2016 for $44.2 million, setting a record for the highest auction of ancient Chinese bronze ware.
